Of all the metals used by artisans since time began to create beautiful objects, copper has an intriguing shine and a warm patina to it that makes it a natural for the home. Here are a few select copper objects that should set off the metal detector in your soul.
TEXTURED
Mexico has a long-standing tradition of superb hand-hammered copper work. This 16-inch-high copper vessel, called “Opaco I,” is by Marco Antonio Paz Ornelas, an award-winning artisan who comes from a family considered among the most skilled in hammered copper work. PRE-MOLDED
Denver-based Dalriada Infinite Design last April launched its Metal Mosaics line of wall tiles displaying the symbols for truth, wisdom and tranquility from three world cultures–Chinese, Celtic and African. The pressed copper tiles, 6 inches square, feature a double-sided adhesive on the back for easy installation and come pre-patinaed and sealed. SCULPTURED
A highlight at Art4Soul, a store in Homewood that features the work of a variety of artisans, is the copper work of Lowell, Ind., welder William Ores. His copper mailboxes, such as this one decorated with a leaf motif, are hung easily on a stucco or brick wall. Measuring 12 by 7 1/2 by 3 inches, the mailbox is $275.
