Take a faux dinosaur bone, roll up a book of mazes patterned on dinosaur and other ancient skeletons, stuff it inside and you’ve got the “Dinomaze Colossal Fossil Maze Book” (Workman Publishing, $14.95) by Elizabeth Carpenter.
There are 40 poster-size mazes of critters such as stegosaurus, velociraptor, woolly mammoth, sabre-toothed tiger and the bear-dog (an ancestor of modern bears and dogs, which are closely related), plus a number of smaller skull-only speed mazes. The mazes include factoids about their subjects, such as the bear-dog tidbit.
The book arrives rolled tightly inside a 2-foot-long, 3-inch-diameter cardboard and plastic bone, so getting the mazes to lie flat offers a challenge at first.
