The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra has been named community volunteer orchestra of the year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras, a statewide service organization.
In recognition, the City of Elmhurst has proclaimed Saturday as Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Day.
The orchestra doubled its educational outreach during the 2000-2001 season by performing for more than 8,400 children at schools in Elmhurst, Bensenville, Berkeley, Bellwood and Northlake. It also expanded its programming by adding a pops concert to its regular seven-concert season.
The orchestra, in its 42nd season, has about 80 members.
