All the pieces were in place for a great game between Julian and Carver: the battle for first place in the Public League Red South, an intense neighborhood rivalry and Sean Dockery’s quest for atonement.
It was all that and more. Dockery scored 43 points, delivered six assists and had three steals as the Jaguars outlasted Carver 84-74 in four overtimes. It helped offset Dockery’s uncharacteristically poor performance in his team’s home loss to Carver last month.
“My coach [Loren Jackson] told me to do whatever I had to in order for us to win,” said Dockery, who hit 14-of-27 shots from the floor and 12-of-14 free throws. “We’re a young team, and we’re still learning how to win in these situations.”
The 6-foot-3-inch senior point guard combined with Mychal Wilson to seize control in the fourth overtime after the Jaguars (14-7, 7-2) missed the final shot at the end of regulation and each of the first three overtimes.
Wilson scored 11 of his 12 points in the final overtime. He scored on a driving layup to stake his team to a 69-67 lead it never relinquished.
Julian converted 10-of-11 free throws in the final 2:20 to pull away.
Johnny Barnette’s 27 points and Cornelius Bardney’s 22 helped Carver (9-10, 6-3) rally from a 32-21 halftime deficit.
