If you have a 5th grader who’s feeling down about all the dead trees littering alleys and curbs throughout the Chicago area, here’s something that, with some help from a teacher, might perk him or her up: the 2002 Arbor Day Poster Contest. The theme is “Trees Are Terrific E Inside and Out.”

Contest packets are available to 5th-grade educators by writing to The National Arbor Day Foundation, Box 85784, Lincoln, NE 68501, or by e-mailing [email protected]. Teachers who sign up will receive a free activity guide on how trees grow and function, including lesson plans, activities and contest information.

The national winner, to be announced on National Arbor Day (April 28), receives a $1,000 savings bond and a lifetime membership in the National Arbor Day Foundation. The winning teacher receives $200 for classroom materials. More than 59,000 classrooms participated in 2001.
