One way to stop Hillcrest is to slow down the game and control the tempo. Andrew was able to do that Wednesday night in Tinley Park for all but a few key minutes of the contest.
Those few minutes, however, were all the No. 8 Hawks needed to hold on for a hard-earned 44-38 win over the Thunderbolts (6-2).
“They were very effective dictating the pace of the game,” Hawks coach John Maniatis said after his team improved to 5-1. “Give [Andrew coach Doug] Erickson credit for preparing his team well.”
Andrew led 30-29 heading into the final quarter, but that’s when Hillcrest took over for good with a 9-0 run. Nadia Bibbs, on crutches earlier in the week with a sprained ankle, tallied five of her nine points and four of her 11 rebounds during the run.
Janelle Hughes, who led Hillcrest with 15 points, hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute to seal the win after Andrew closed within 38-36 and 40-38.
Andrew’s Molly McLean scored eight of her game-high 16 points during an 8-2 run in the third quarter which gave the Thunderbolts their biggest lead of the game 26-21, while teammate Dawn Vander Meer, who averages 19 points a game, finished with a season-low 10 points.
