The football team at Riverside-Brookfield isn’t the only team at the school to possess great offensive skill.
Shatone Powers and Tim Brasic were stars on the football field as the Bulldogs advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals, but they proved they have some moves on the basketball court as well at the Lyons Township tournament Friday night.
Powers had 22 points, six assists and four steals and Brasic, an All-State quarterback, contributed 15 points and six rebounds as Riverside-Brookfield stunned No. 13 Lyons 68-59.
R-B led 29-28 at halftime, but the efforts of its football stars, along with Brandon Davis, carried the Bulldogs to the victory. Davis had 20 points and nine rebounds.
“We’ve got several skilled players on offense,” coach Tom McCloskey said. “We got contributions from everyone tonight. Davis was very effective for us in the second half.”
Jim Maley had 32 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead Lyons (1-1), which finished third in Class AA last season.
In the other game, Joe Soroko poured in 35 points as Gordon Tech (2-0) defeated Harper 85-79. Dillion Sneed added 19 points for the Rams, while Tommy Spates had 25 points to lead Harper (0-2).
Proviso East tournament: Top-ranked Proviso East and Dee Brown put on a show for the home fans.
Sparked by 20 points in the third quarter by Brown, an Illinois-bound senior guard, the Pirates (3-0) roared past No. 19 Evanston on the way to an 88-56 victory in the title game of their own tournament.
Brown, who closed with 36 points and earned tourney MVP honors, ignited an 18-2 Pirates run when he scored on a baseline drive with 4 minutes 16 seconds left in the third quarter. Brown had 16 points in that run–eight straight to start it and six more to end it, including two buckets after steals in the final minute.
By the time they were through, the Pirates had turned a shaky five-point lead into a 67-40 bulge heading into the final quarter.
“He’s the leader,” Proviso East coach Troy Jackson said. “When he wants to do it, he’s got free reign until I pull that leash.”
Evanston (2-1) was led by senior forward Stacey Moragne’s 21 points. Moragne helped keep his team close in the first half, especially in the second quarter when he scored 10 of the Wildkits’ 17 points.
In Friday’s other tournament game, five Oak Park players scored in double figures as the Huskies (1-2) hammered Gage Park 107-42. Senior forwards Max Sakellaris and Darnell Usry led the winners with 16 points apiece.
Galesburg tournament: Dameon Mason had 15 points and Kris Jenkins added 12 as No. 3 West Aurora (2-0) held off Peoria Woodruff 51-49.
Bloom tournament: Joe Chapman scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Antonio Cool added 15 points as No. 4 Bloom improved to 3-0 with a 64-35 victory over Sandburg (1-2). . . . Chris Burras totaled 20 points and 18 rebounds as Leo (3-0) rallied past Hillcrest 63-56. The Lions outscored Hillcrest 21-8 in the fourth quarter. Steve Mason’s 16 points led Hillcrest (2-1). . . . Herbert Windfield made seven three-pointers and finished with 23 points as Manley (2-1) blew out Phillips (0-3) 101-55. . . . Charles Bass scored 18 points as Crete-Monee (1-2) defeated South Shore (0-3) 49-23.
Jacksonville tournament: Jabari Saunders poured in 26 points and No. 6 Joliet (2-0) outscored Jacksonville 19-4 in the fourth quarter to defeat the host team 72-58. In its first game of the day, Joliet defeated Peoria Richwoods 61-50.
Rockford Boylan tournament: Steve Harris scored 18 points and made 13-of-16 free throws in the fourth quarter as Rockford Boylan knocked off No. 8 Thornridge 74-68. Jeremy Massingale’s 19 points led Thornridge (1-1).
St. Rita tournament: Rick Harrigan scored 34 points and was 9-of-11 shooting from three-point range as No. 14 Brother Rice (3-0) rolled past Hubbard 89-66. Dionte Brown had 17 points to lead Hubbard (1-2). . . . Jerrah Young had 15 points and 16 rebounds as No. 15 St. Rita (2-1) held off Hales Franciscan 52-46. LaVell Richardson had 11 points for Hales (1-2). . . . Matt Weber scored 24 points as St. Ignatius (1-2) downed Morgan Park 57-48. Jeremy Nixon had 16 points for Morgan Park (1-2). . . . Adam Dauskas scored 17 points as Homewood-Flossmoor (2-1) downed Nazareth 63-55.
Schaumburg tournament: Tony Young scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the 16th-ranked Saxons (2-0) to a 73-64 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South (1-1). Zach Pancratz added 20 and Brandon Reichel chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds for the Saxons. James Wangler led Wheaton Warrenville South with 17. . . . Ben Engstrom scored 22 points as Libertyville (2-0) toppled Thornton (1-1) 57-43. The Wildcats scored the first 11 points of the second half to take control.
Kennedy-King tournament: Marshall outscored No. 17 Von Steuben 30-18 in the second half as the Commandos (2-0) pulled off the 55-46 upset. Andre Goodwin scored 20 points, while David Hilliard contributed 14 points and 18 rebounds for Marshall. Marshall held Von Steuben to 22 percent shooting in the second half.
In the other game, Clyde Hooks scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Simeon (1-1) defeated Robeson 58-37. The Wolverines outscored Robeson 20-2 in the third quarter to break the game open. Courtney Williams scored 10 points to lead Robeson (0-2).
Rock Island tournament: Aaron Spears had 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as No. 18 Dunbar (2-0) cruised past Carver 57-31. Marcel Mahon added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Mighty Men, who led 30-9 at halftime.
Hinsdale Central tournament: Matt Gleitsman scored 12 points and Erik Turnbull added 10 as Hinsdale Central (3-0) rolled past undermanned Downers Grove South 66-36. Downers South dressed just seven players because several members will be playing in Saturday’s Class 8A football championship. . . . Jon Gilkey scored 28 points and Brad Jones added 17 as Larkin (1-2) beat Argo 70-62.
Lisle tournament: Terence Parker put in 24 points while Joe Cortez added 17 points and 16 rebounds for Lisle (2-0) in a 74-57 defeat of Driscoll. . . . Steve Larsen scored 19 points as Westmont (1-1) edged Timothy Christian 51-47. Westmont trailed 45-44 with 1:12 remaining when Adam Pierce banked in a three-pointer to give the Sentinels the lead for good.
Kankakee/Olivet Nazarene tournament: Mike Terrell scored 24 points to lead Kankakee (2-0) past Bradley-Bourbonnais (0-2) 54-44.

St. Benedict tournament: Jack Walsh scored 12 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists as Holy Cross eased past Immaculate Conception 59-48. The Crusaders improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1972 and clinched the tournament championship before Saturday’s game against St. Benedict. Holy Cross’ Jawond Gage led all scorers with 22 points.
St. Charles East tournament: Derek Meister’s 16 points and Dan Walser’s 13 led Wheaton North (2-0) past East Aurora 67-60. Jerrah Price had 17 points to lead East Aurora (1-1). . . . Machesney Park Harlem (2-0) won a 71-68 decision over St. Charles East in overtime behind Maurice Smith’s 21 points. Brian Schmit led the Saints (1-1) with 24 points.
St. Viator tournament: Joe Rizzo and Mike Hlavacek scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, as Conant (2-1) topped St. Viator 56-43 to win the tournament. Brian Hare led all scorers with 20 points for St. Viator (2-1). . . . Seth Franklin scored 18 points and Mark Morrison added 13 to lead Deerfield (2-1) to an 83-35 victory over Sullivan.

Stagg tournament: Marcus Stevenson, who scored 13 points, hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer as St. Laurence improved to 4-0 with a 54-53 victory over Stagg (3-1). David Genslinger, the game’s top scorer with 24, had given the Chargers the lead on a basket with 7 seconds remaining.
Warren tournament: Quentin Herring scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as the Blue Devils (2-0) cruised past Fremd 60-47. . . . A layup by Brian Schlemm (21 points) with 22 seconds left gave Carmel (1-1) a 55-53 victory over Waukegan.
