There’s a sign that hangs in Providence Catholic’s gymnasium reading: Not In Our House.
Providence outside hitter Katie Freeman reminded her team of that during its 10-15, 15-12, 15-11 come-from-behind victory against Marian Catholic on Thursday night in New Lenox.
“I was not going to lose on our home court,” Freeman said after the Celtics extended their home winning streak from last season to 13 consecutive. “When we were down [12-8] in the second game, I pulled our team together and told them we couldn’t lose to Marian again, especially in our gym.”
Marian had already handed the Celtics (19-1) their only loss of the season Saturday in the Rich East tournament. The Spartans won Game 1 and were up 12-8 in Game 2 before the Celtics pulled it together with a 7-0 run behind four of Freeman’s game-high 15 kills.
In Game 3 Freeman received some help from teammate Sheri Starks. She recorded six of her nine kills as the Celtics jumped to a 13-6 lead. The Spartans (14-7) rallied back to 13-11 but a Freeman kill followed by an unforced error locked up the match for the Celtics.
Jessie Janik added nine kills for the Celtics. The Spartans were led by Theresa Coughlin’s 11 kills.
