The officers plan to head out Friday morning in three squad cars and a van, and return in a week when another group of 15 will take their place. Three groups will use their vacation time to volunteer.
“It will be a big relay team,” said Tony Burns, sheriff’s investigator for the special operations unit.
As the hope of finding life beneath the World Trade Center’s rubble diminishes, it will be the job of police officers to offer sympathy to families who are grieving, said Tamara Wuerffel, a sheriff’s investigator.
“I’m going to try to talk to them the best that I can,” she said. “It’s nice for them to see that we are from Chicago and are coming to help them with their grief and help New York City get back on its feet.”
