A DuPage County judge on Tuesday refused a request to grant bail to accused killer Billy Lee Warren, 50, of Stickney, who was charged earlier this month in the 1978 slaying of a Downers Grove couple.

Public Defender Stephen Baker, who asked that no bail be changed to $250,000, said that prosecutors have no physical evidence linking Warren to the crime except “purported observations by an ex-wife and a brother claiming he lied about an alibi.”

But Judge Ann Jorgensen said Warren had “a great motivation to flee with his alibi apparently gone.”

His alibi vanished when Warren’s brother withdrew his claim that Warren was with him at the time of the slayings.

Glenn Schulz was Warren’s boss at a suburban funeral vault business. Warren called in sick to work on the day of the slayings and drew a critical response from Schulz, who didn’t believe him. The killings took place later that night.
