The first of 50 planned decorative “wayfaring” signs made its debut Tuesday at the northeast corner of York Road and Park Street.

The sign, directing people to Elmhurst College, Wilder Park and other downtown attractions hangs from a steel bracket cast in the form of an elm branch.

Officials plan to start by posting 12 such signs at major thoroughfares entering the city, such as north York at the Interstate Highway 290 east and west ramps; North Avenue near Illinois Highway 83 and the Interstate Toll Highway 294 ramp; two signs at each end of St. Charles Road; a sign at each end of Butterfield Road; one at south York at Vallette Street; and one for cyclists and pedestrians on the Prairie Path.

The second phase will include signs designating public parking and local museums.

The project started in 1998 with 100 signs and kiosks to be placed on the Prairie Path. Aldermen scaled back that plan after learning each sign would cost $2,000 to $3,000. The 50 signs now planned will cost about $140,000.
