Would-be rocketeers, take note: Engineer William Gurstelle has written a book for you. It’s called “Backyard Ballistics: Build Potato Cannons, Paper Match Rockets, Cincinnati Fire Kites, and More Dynamic Devices” (Chicago Review Press, $16.95).

With a strong emphasis on safety (don’t skip this part), Gurstelle writes how to construct 13 ballistic devices out of inexpensive household materials. Projects include a water rocket using a 2-liter pop bottle that can reach heights of 50 feet and a pneumatic missile–the harder it’s stomped, the higher it goes.

The book examines the physics behind the projects and also profiles scientists such as Alfred Nobel, Robert Goddard and Sir Isaac Newton.
