9:30 a.m.

On Saturday morning, throw your bikes onto or in your car (more on this later) and head down to La Grange Road in the heart of La Grange for the town’s annual Pet Parade. The whole village — and its four-legged companions — puts on the dog for the affair, which winds down a short stretch of La Grange Road and features contests, prizes and all sorts of Fido-related fun. Pet Parade: free. Caffeine: $6 for lattes from Starbucks.

12:00

Head a bit north on La Grange Road (you can walk it easily) to the Original House of Pancakes for a fortifying meal of pancakes and coffee. Meal for two at Original House of Pancakes: $18.

1:00

Drive south on La Grange Road, go west on Ogden Avenue and look for the Bemis Woods Forest Preserve. Hop on your bikes and enjoy the leafy Salt Creek Trail. Head east along the meandering trail and you’ll end up at Brookfield Zoo, where you can park your two-wheelers and observe the wilder cousins of those pet-parade contest winners. Admission for two: $14.

Grand total: $38.
