When it comes to on-the-job happiness, a growing number of American workers can borrow a line from a vintage Rolling Stones song and lament, they “can’t get no satisfaction.”

Recent studies point to increasing levels of workplace dissatisfaction, including an October survey by the Conference Board that found barely half of U.S. workers (51 percent) describe themselves as “happy” at work, down from 59 percent in 1995.

Contentment levels of mid-career employees slipped from 57.3 percent to 46.5 percent. The size of the paycheck seemed to play a role in worker bliss, with those making less than $25,000 a year expressing much more dissatisfaction than those making $50,000 and up.

But money is not everything, it seems.. Satisfaction among employees bringing home more than $50,000 annually charted a big dip in the happiness quotient, down to 55.1 percent from 66.5 percent five years earlier.
