BEARS

1. (8) David Terrell, wr, Michigan.

2. (38) Anthony Thomas, rb, Michigan.

3. (68) Mike Gandy, g, Notre Dame.

4. (103) Karon Riley, de, Minnesota.

5. (138) Bernard Robertson, c, Tulane.

7. (208) John Capel, wr, Florida.

They need points and Terrell and Thomas scored 78 touchdowns between them in their Michigan careers. Gandy could push for starting guard job, and Robertson adds depth where they have lost guard Todd Perry. If Riley can become a factor quickly, it’s a plus. Capel is the fastest man in the draft, but nobody knows whether he can contribute as a return man or a receiver.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

1. (2) Leonard Davis, t, Texas.

2. (34) Kyle Vanden Bosch, de, Nebraska.

2. (54) Michael Stone, db, Memphis.

3. (64) Adrian Wilson, db, N.C. State.

4. (98) Bill Gramatica, k, South Florida.

4. (123) Marcus Bell, dt, Memphis.

5. (133) Mario Fatafehi, dt, Kansas State.

6. (166) Bobby Newcombe, wr, Nebraska.

7. (202) Renaldo Hill, db, Michigan State.

7. (246) Tevita Ofahengaue, te, BYU.

Coach Dave McGinnis ignored his defense by selecting can’t-miss huge tackle Davis and trading away top cornerback Aeneas Williams. Davis will be part of a gigantic offensive line protecting quarterback Jake Plummer. Last year’s No. 1 draft pick, running back Thomas Jones, must come through to take pressure off rebuilding defense.

ATLANTA FALCONS

1. (1) Michael Vick, qb, Virginia Tech.

2. (35) Alge Crumpler, te, North Carolina.

4. (99) Robert Garza, c, Texas A&M-Kingsville.

4. (102) Matt Stewart, lb, Vanderbilt.

5. (136) Vinny Sutherland, wr, Purdue.

6. (167) Randy Garner, de, Arkansas.

7. (215) Corey Hall, db, Appalachian State.

7. (219) Kynan Forney, g, Hawaii.

7. (226) Ronald Flemons, de, Texas A&M.

7. (236) Quentin McCord, wr, Kentucky.

If nothing else, their bold move up to select Vick should enable them to sell tickets in the Georgia Dome, something most NFL teams don’t have to worry about. Adding Crumpler means the cost of last year’s No. 1 pick for tight end Reggie Kelly was wasted. Vick could get himself mauled by the time he learns how to play and by the time the Falcons get competitive.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

1. (11) Dan Morgan, lb, Miami.

2. (44) Kris Jenkins, dt, Maryland.

3. (74) Steve Smith, wr, Utah.

4. (106) Chris Weinke, qb, Florida State.

5. (143) Jarrod Cooper, db, Kansas State.

6. (175) Dee Brown, rb, Syracuse.

7. (211) Louis Williams, c, LSU.

7. (227) Mike Roberg, te, Idaho.

Everybody loves Morgan, top linebacker in the draft. Jenkins also should help rebuild the washed-up defensive line of Eric Swann, Reggie White and Chuck Smith that didn’t work last year. This is the best place in the NFL for 28-year-old Heisman Trophy winner Weinke because the Panthers have no starting quarterback. Weinke could push untested Jeff Lewis.

DALLAS COWBOYS

2. (53) Quincy Carter, qb, Georgia.

2. (56) Tony Dixon, db, Alabama.

3. (93) Willie Blade, dt, Mississippi State.

4. (122) Markus Steele, lb, Southern Cal.

5. (137) Matt Lehr, c, Virginia Tech.

6. (171) Daleroy Stewart, dt, Southern Miss

7. (207) Colston Weatherington, de, Central Missouri.

7. (240) John Nix, dt, Southern Mississippi.

7. (242) Char-Ron Dorsey, ot, Florida State.

Owner Jerry Jones traded his first-round pick last year for receiver Joey Galloway, who got hurt. Then he traded down twice in the second round this year before finally taking Carter, considered a future prospect. Wait until next year, Cowboy fans. Your team is taking the year off.

DETROIT LIONS

1. (18) Jeff Backus, ot, Michigan.

2. (50) Dominic Raiola, c, Nebraska.

2. (61) Shaun Rogers, dt, Texas.

5. (148) Scotty Anderson, wr, Grambling.

5. (149) Mike McMahon, qb, Rutgers.

6. (173) Jason Glenn, lb, Texas A&M.

They would have preferred Michigan guard Steve Hutchinson, but gladly jumped on his roommate, Jeff Backus, who could play guard or tackle. Raiola could start at center. Rogers is coming off a serious ankle injury and might not be ready to help this year. McMahon is an interesting choice who will get a long look at quarterback.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

1. (10) Jamal Reynolds, de, Florida State.

2. (41) Robert Ferguson, wr, Texas A&M.

3. (71) Bhawoh Jue, db, Penn State.

3. (72) Torrance Marshall, lb, Oklahoma.

4. (105) Bill Ferrario, g, Wisconsin.

6. (198) David Martin, te, Tennessee.

Reynolds is a speed rusher who is needed because the Pack’s leading sacker was ex-Bear John Thierry. Ferguson is a great athlete who will push for playing time immediately. GM Ron Wolf hopes he’s another Robert Brooks or Antonio Freeman and can give Brett Favre another reliable target. Jue, Marshall and Ferrario add depth.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

1. (27) Michael Bennett, rb, Wisconsin.

2. (57) Willie Howard, de, Stanford.

3. (69) Eric Kelly, db, Kentucky.

4. (130) Shawn Worthen, dt, TCU.

4. (131) Cedric James, wr, TCU.

5. (157) Patrick Chukwurah, lb, Wyoming.

6. (189) Carey Scott, db, Kentucky State.

7. (225) Brian Crawford, ot, W. Oregon.

Bennett looks like the perfect replacement for Robert Smith, who retired. Bennett has similar speed but comes in without much experience. Howard was better as a junior than he was as a senior. Vikings are desperate for help at his position. Kelly also will get a chance to start.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

1. (23) Deuce McAllister, rb, Mississippi.

3. (70) Sedrick Hodge, lb, North Carolina.

3. (81) Kenny Smith, dt, Alabama.

4. (115) Moran Norris, rb, Kansas.

5. (153) Onome Ojo, wr, UC Davis.

6. (185) Mitch White, ot, Oregon State.

7. (221) Ennis Davis, dt, Southern Cal.

McAllister could be the steal of the draft if he can shake his injury bug. He is big, fast and versatile, able to line up at receiver because he has the best hands of all the running backs. He also can return kicks. What does it mean for Ricky Williams? That could be a big question going into this season.

NEW YORK GIANTS

1. (22) Will Allen, db, Syracuse.

3. (78) William Peterson, db, W. Illinois.

4. (114) Cedric Scott, de, Southern Miss

4. (125) Jesse Palmer, qb, Florida.

5. (160) John Markham, k, Vanderbilt.

5. (162) Jonathan Carter, wr, Troy State.

7. (230) Ross Kolodziej, dt, Wisconsin.

They came into the draft looking for help at one position, cornerback. They left with cornerbacks in the first and second rounds, trading up for fast Will Allen and happily taking sleeper William Peterson, a former Michigan player who transferred to Western Illinois. Palmer is a good pick who will be groomed as a backup for Kerry Collins.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

1. (25) Freddie Mitchell, wr, UCLA.

2. (55) Quinton Caver, lb, Arkansas.

3. (63) Derrick Burgess, de, Mississippi.

4. (121) Correll Buckhalter, rb, Nebraska.

5. (147) Tony Stewart, te, Penn State.

5. (155) A.J. Feeley, qb, Oregon.

Mitchell will give Donovan McNabb another weapon. He is a polished performer who showed more speed in postseason workouts. A big playmaker from a big-time school, Mitchell lacks no confidence. Caver, Burgess and Steele give the Eagles more depth on a defensive front that is already tough enough.

ST. LOUIS RAMS

1. (12) Damione Lewis, dt, Miami.

1. (20) Adam Archuleta, db, Arizona State.

1. (29) Ryan Pickett, dt, Ohio State.

2. (42) Tommy Polley, lb, Florida State.

3. (83) Brian Allen, lb, Florida State.

4. (116) Milton Wynn, wr, Washington St.

4. (129) Brandon Manumaleuna, te, Arizona.

5. (145) Jeremetrius Butler, db, Kansas St.

6. (197) Francis St. Paul, wr, N. Arizona.

Three No. 1 picks enabled coach Mike Martz to continue rebuilding defense, and he successfully resisted adding to his offensive arsenal until the fourth round. Lewis, Archuleta, Pickett and Polley all will compete for starting jobs right away. Trading for Pro Bowl cornerback Aeneas Williams of Arizona was another draft-day coup. This is a total remake for new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

1. (7) Andre Carter, de, California

2. (47) Jamie Winborn, lb, Vanderbilt.

3. (80) Kevan Barlow, rb, Pittsburgh.

6. (169) Cedrick Wilson, wr, Tennessee.

6. (179) Rashad Holman, db, Louisville.

6. (191) Menson Holloway, de, Tex.-El Paso.

7. (209) Alex Lincoln, lb, Auburn.

7. (224) Eric Johnson, te, Yale.

Bill Walsh thinks Carter already is better than several starting defensive ends and traded up to land him. He will give Bryant Young long-awaited help right away. Winborn is short but active and will get playing time immediately. The 49ers have no established running back, so Barlow could compete to replace departed Charlie Garner.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

1. (14) Kenyatta Walker, ot, Florida.

3. (84) Dwight Smith, db, Akron.

4. (117) John Howell, db, Colorado State.

5. (151) Russ Hochstein, g, Nebraska.

6. (174) Jameel Cook, rb, Illinois.

6. (183) Ellis Wyms, de, Mississippi State.

7. (205) Dauntae’ Finger, te, N. Carolina.

7. (223) Than Merrill, db, Yale.

7. (234) Joe Tafoya, de, Arizona.

The Bucs usually ignore offensive linemen, but Walker was so enticing they spent their second-round pick to move up and grab him. He will start immediately at left tackle and fill a gaping hole, one of their few weaknesses. Smith put up big numbers at little Akron. Adding free agents Brad Johnson and Simeon Rice were off-season upgrades.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

1. (15) Rod Gardner, wr, Clemson.

2. (45) Fred Smoot, db, Mississippi State.

4. (109) Sage Rosenfels, qb, Iowa State.

5. (154) Darnerien McCants, wr, Delaware State.

6. (186) Mario Monds, dt, Cincinnati.

Gardner is compared to Cris Carter and Sterling Sharpe, a solid receiver who runs excellent routes and has great hands. Smoot is a risk, a mouthy player who could replace Deion Sanders. Rosenfels indicates new coach Marty Schottenheimer is looking for help at quarterback.
