Officials at Zion-Benton Township High School remained tightlipped Monday about the school board’s decision last week to place Supt. Peter Alvino on leave.

“He’s on leave until further notice,” said board president Jan Suthard. “In the interest of fairness, we do not want to go into any details at this time.”

Alvino’s duties will be carried out by retired Supt. Gary Fields, who agreed to serve as acting superintendent. Fields could not be reached for comment Monday.

When Fields retired last summer, the Zion-Benton school board hired Alvino, who was then superintendent of a school district in the Milwaukee suburb of Greenfield.

The Zion high school has 2,100 students from Zion, Beach Park, Winthrop Harbor, and Wadsworth and unincorporated areas in Newport and Benton Townships.

During his short tenure, Alvino created a controversy when he proposed contracting out the school’s driver-education program, which would have required increasing the student fees for the classes to $275 from $50.

That proposal was tabled by the school board after several hundred parents protested at a board meeting.
