DuPage County is selling nearly 12 acres of land near its recycling center in Carol Stream for $1.85 million.

The DuPage County Board Tuesday approved the sale to Northern Builders Inc., which is buying the land because county officials said they no longer saw any potential uses for it. The property sits on the north side of Fullerton Avenue between Schmale Road and Gary Avenue, next to the county’s recycling plant in Carol Stream.

The county purchased the land, in addition to another 12 acres of adjacent property, more than 10 years ago as the site for the recycling center. The plant was built on both parcels, but the building took up only half of the assembled acres. The rest of the land was left vacant for possible expansion, said Public Works Director Gregory Wilcox.

The county never expanded the facility, Wilcox said, and DuPage officials eventually decided to sell the land.

Wilcox said the county made a profit on the land. When DuPage bought the 24 acres, he said, it paid $2.26 million. “Now we’re getting $1.8 million for half of that,” he said.

How the money will be spent remains unclear. Wilcox said if the DuPage County Board approves a planned $3 million renovation of the recycling plant, the money will go toward that. “But that is up to the board,” Wilcox said.
