The second in a series of spot compliance checks of tobacco retailers in Vernon Hills resulted in none of the targeted establishments being found in violation of state laws forbidding the sale of tobacco products to minors, police said.
“Naturally, we are very pleased,” Vernon Hills Police Chief Mark Fleischhauer said. “This is an excellent indicator that the tobacco-license establishments in Vernon Hills are making a conscientious effort to prevent the sale of tobacco products to minors.”
The enforcement effort involved police-supervised minors attempting to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco products over the counter and via vending machines at 20 retailers chosen at random, police said.
Officials attributed the 100 percent compliance to education and a sting operation in November that resulted in three sales to minors.
