With people living longer than ever, it is heartening to see the many young people who are making an effort to improve the planet. ThinkQuest online contains a great number of socially responsible student-designed Web sites that were entered in the ThinkQuest Internet Challenge and ThinkQuest Junior contests.

These sites take on issues as diverse as world hunger, AIDS, cultural exchange and environmental protection.

Both ThinkQuest programs are free to enter. The deadline for registration is May 31, with entries due Sept. 5; finalist teams will be announced in early December. Winning students, coaches and schools receive scholarships and cash awards. In the past, these awards have totaled more than $1 million per year.
