Mo Szweda of North Central in the sprints, Kathy Carroll of Illinois Wesleyan in the longer events–rarely have two women so dominated a swimming meet as these two did in the recent College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet at Millikin.

For the second year in a row, Szweda and Carroll were named co-most valuable swimmers in the CCIW meet. Wheaton narrowly won the team title.

Carroll, a junior from Sandburg High, set CCIW records and conditionally qualified for the NCAA Division III meet in the three events she won–the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes 5.23 seconds, the 1,650 free in 17:35.09 and the 400 individual medley in 4:36.58.

Carroll also swam a leg on the 200 free relay team, the second-place 400 medley relay team and the third-place 800 free relay team.

Szweda, who went to Glenbard East, also won three events–the 50 freestyle in 24.32, the 100 butterfly in 58.6 and the 100 free in 51.90. Her 50 time set a conference record and conditionally qualified her for the NCAA meet.

Her fly time fell short of her own CCIW record. Her time in the 100 free was the best in the nation this year by a Division III swimmer and automatically qualified her for the NCAA meet.

Szweda also swam the leadoff 200 meters in North Central’s winning 800 free relay team. Her time of 1:52.89 was No. 1 in the nation this year in Division III.

Play ball: Les Miller Field at Roosevelt and Halsted Roads was snowy, muddy and unplayable. So was Rocky Miller Field at Isabella Street and Ashland Avenue in Evanston. So Illinois-Chicago and Northwestern opened their seasons against each other last week in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Wildcats won two of three games, but Flames senior lefty Steve Carlson from Newark was the individual standout. He struck out 10 while yielding only three hits in UIC’s 4-1 victory in the opener. A dropped third strike helped Carlson set a school record of four strikeouts in an inning.

UIC hit five triples in the series, two by Chris Kerpan from Waukegan and one apiece by rookie shortstop Mike Bruzer from Deerfield, Weber Bowen from Minneapolis and Curtis Granderson from Thornton Fractional South.

Wes Gilliam from Thornwood, who missed last season because of injury, struck out nine Wildcats batters in 4 2/3 innings.

Women’s basketball: Heidi Burkhart, Rockford College guard from Winnebago High, set a school record with 10 steals in 23 minutes of an 84-49 rout of Concordia. Averaging 23.1 points per game, Burkhart had 14 points and nine assists in the game.

Pam O’Connor, Eastern Illinois’ freshman center from Fenton, was named Ohio Valley Conference rookie of the week for her 33 points and 17 rebounds in games against Tennessee-Martin and Murray State.

Men’s basketball: University of Chicago sophomore Derek Reich from Niles West was selected University Athletic Association player of the week. He scored 33 points and had 17 rebounds at Brandeis and added 15 points and eight rebounds at New York University.

Bryan Zyrkowski, Harper College freshman fron Conant, broke the school record by scoring eight three-point baskets in a 26-point game against College of DuPage.

Wrestling: Wheaton All-American Dan Weber from Conant repeated as 165-pound champion as Augustana won its 19th CCIW title in the last 20 years.

Craig Collins, a graduate of De La Salle, became the fifth Loras College athlete to register 100 victories. A two-time All-American at 149 pounds, he carried a 103-34 record into this weekend’s Iowa Conference championships.

Women’s track and field: Northern Illinois senior Danelle Buttel from German Valley Forreston broke the school record for 400 meters three times this season, the most recent at 1:03.95.

Illinois-Chicago junior Monieka Thompson from Chicago Steinmetz set a school record of 2:12.38 in the 800 meters in the Cannon IV meet at Butler.
