Serenaded with a homespun tune celebrating their 20-year careers on the bench, two Lake County judges were honored Wednesday by friends, peers and courthouse staffers.

Judge Jane Waller, who presides over the 19th Judicial Circuit, and Judge Emilio Santi, who hears probate and arbitration matters, were described as “erudite, judicious and temperate” by Judge Margaret Mullen, who presides over Juvenile Court and currently sits in Divorce Court.

Waller was Lake County’s first female judge, first female circuit judge and first female chief judge. She said she has concentrated on trying to do the right thing.

“You all have taught me a lot,” Waller said. “It’s been a great 20 years. I hope I have a few good years left.”

Santi, who immigrated to the United States from Italy as a child, expressed gratitude to those present who have touched his life. Nearly half of his life has been spent in their company, he said.
