The Bensenville Village Board has voted to pay part of residents’ heating bills because it received a windfall of taxes from higher natural gas bills paid by residents.

Officials will enclose $30 in Bensenville Bucks in the village’s next water bill mailing, said Village Manager Bryon Vana. The Bucks will go to about 4,000 homeowners and renters who pay their own heating bills.

“Essentially we’re rebating the percentage of our utility tax proceeds that came from the rise in natural gas costs,” Vana said.

Bensenville Bucks are gift certificates accepted as cash by 36 participating businesses in the village. The program started last February as an incentive to shop in Bensenville.
