Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On a day made for love and sweets, a Belizean seaweed drink is the natural choice. That’s because this tasty shake-like beverage is reputed to be just as effective at boosting the libido as it is at satisfying your sweet tooth. Made with evaporated milk, condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg and dried seaweed that has been soaked, boiled and gelatinized, seaweed shakes taste nothing like the shaggy vegetation they are named after. Instead they recall a thick yummy eggnog-but an eggnog that, according Belizean folklore, will put both men and women in the mood for looove. You can find seaweed drinks made from scratch at Flowers Pot Belizean Restaurant (7328 N. Clark St.; 773-761-4388 ) in a milky or slurpee-like form for $3 or at Tickies Restaurant (7605 N. Paulina St.; 773-973-3919) where it sells in a bottle for $3. The shakes will keep in the refrigerator for up to a week, but if you are planning on storing them longer, consider the freezer. It’s also best to call the restaurants before stopping by for your fix as the beverage takes a couple of days to brew and will probably be going fast around Valentine’s Day.
