The Lake Forest City Council voted Monday to approve a 20-cent-per-mile fare increase for licensed cab companies.

Under the new rates, which should take effect later this month, the charge for the first mile will increase to $3.35 from $3.15, and the rate for each additional mile will increase to $1.80 from $1.60. Waiting time charges have been increased to $20 an hour from $18.50.

Rosemary Haack, assistant to the city manager, said North Suburban Yellow Cab Inc. requested the increase because of rising fuel costs and associated automobile expenses, as well as increased expenses for office employees and mechanics. It is the first rate hike since 1997.

Haack said the new fares are consistent with the rates charged in other North Shore communities. She said the city has received no complaints regarding North Suburban Yellow Cab in the last several years.

The rate increase applies to North Suburban Yellow Cab and American Taxi Dispatch, the only firms licensed by the city to solicit fares from cab stands and from the street.
