– Two North Suburban venues are once again cranking out hot jazz to combat the winter chill. Lake Forest’s Gorton Community Center turns up the heat with its 13th Annual Cabin Fever Jazz Series starting with the lively Red Rose Ragtime Jazz Band on Sunday, followed by Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico (and Friends) on Feb. 26, the noted Jeremy Kahn Trio on March 4 and the popular Salty Dogs of Chicago on March 25. Held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Rd. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students with ID. Seating is cabaret-style with a wine, beer, soft drink cash bar. Because some dates sell out, reservations are strongly suggested; 847-234-6060.
The Highland Park Community House’s antidote is its 6th Annual Jazz Series. The series started last week but the continuing schedule includes Orbert Davis and his band’s Salute to “Satchmo,” Feb. 25, and Frank D’Rone and the Bobby Schiff Trio’s presentation of Jazz at the Movies, March 18. Concerts are 3-5 p.m. at the Highland Park Community House, 1991 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park. Series tickets are $30 adults, $15 children 12 and under; individual tickets are $12 adults, $6 children 12 and under. The cabaret-style seating is limited so get there early and bring your own refreshments; 847-432-1515.
