Warren held off a gallant Mundelein charge with a strong fourth quarter Friday night to pull out a 43-36 North Suburban Lake victory.
The Blue Devils (16-4, 6-1), who beat Stevenson by the same score last week, got an outstanding performance on both ends of the floor from 6-foot-7-inch center Matt Klemm. His 15 points and 13 rebounds told only half the story.
Klemm was given the challenge of guarding 6-9 Graham Beatty and did so exquisitely, with help from teammates Aaron Moore (12 points) and Russ Schaibly. He fronted Beatty all night and held him to seven points and five rebounds before Beatty fouled out with 1:19 left.
“I didn’t really sense he got frustrated at any point. I just did the best I could and got great help from the rest of the team,” Klemm said. “I knew if I got in foul trouble like I did last game, that I’d be sitting. We put a lot of emphasis in practice this week on helping in the post. It was the toughest I had to work all year. He’s a great player.”
After jumping to a 21-8 lead early and holding the Mustangs (15-5, 3-4) to 28 percent shooting (6-for-21) in the first half, Warren ran into Mundelein’s second-half charge. Kyle Wilhelm hit a pair of three-pointers and a layup to pull Mundelein even at 25 late in the third.
A key stretch in the fourth came with Warren holding a 32-31 lead. Moore stepped in to take a charge on Beatty, Klemm put back a rebound basket, Matt Van Daele recorded a key steal and Beatty fouled out–all in a 1:45 span.
