The public will be able to check materials out of the new Fremont Public Library starting Thursday, despite a technical problem that has prevented the new library from having Internet access for most of its first week.

The $10 million library opened Sunday without an Internet connection, which meant the library staffers could not access the patron and material information shared by its 20-member consortium, leaving them unable to check books in or out or access the card catalog.

Ameritech said it needed more time to lay the cable necessary to support the data connection of Ameritech’s central office in Libertyville, the library and Computer View Inc., the library’s Internet service provider in Arlington Heights.

Library director Kelly Krieg-Sigman said Ameritech hopes to have the connection completed by Friday.

“However, the management team and I have chosen not to wait until Friday. We are going to start offering rudimentary checkout services as of 9 a.m. Thursday so that if Ameritech’s connection doesn’t work or something else delays it, we will at least be able to check material out.”
