The Lake County Board’s Law and Judicial Committee is considering a site in southern Mundelein for a new branch court facility to handle traffic and other ticket violations, officials said Wednesday.

The proposed site is near Illinois Highways 60 and 83 and U.S. Highway 45. It is intended to serve Fremont and Vernon Townships, which are expected to be magnets for future population growth, said Bonnie Thomson Carter, committee chairwoman.
“The elements that went into helping us make the decision about where the court facility should be were population data, the number of police officers, the number of tickets written, and the residency of people who have received tickets,” Carter said. “We also wanted to make sure the majority of people will be able to get there within 30 minutes. That location will actually benefit the greatest number of county residents.”
Carter said county officials will be in touch with Mundelein officials to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed. She said officials hope to identify a site as soon as possible, so they can buy the land and begin construction of the building that will be designed to meet the needs of law enforcement and residents. She said officials hope to have the court branch operating in 2002.
The Lake County Board allocated $1 million toward the project in the capital improvement plan it adopted in June.
The site will be the third branch court in the county. Other sites are in Waukegan’s Lakehurst mall and Grayslake, said Lake County spokesman Joe Chekouras.
