Now that the school has secured alternate means to pay for a varsity baseball scoreboard, the District 230 board has approved the purchase for Sandburg High School.
At a recent meeting, the four board members present voted to accept the $15,332 bid by Baum Sign Inc. of Aurora for the scoreboard. The board rejected the bid at its Nov. 20 meeting because of questions surrounding a previously proposed $10,000 donation from Pepsi Inc. for the project.
“My concern was, `Are we going to have a lot of advertising?'” board member Frank Grabowski said after the meeting. “They seem to have secured the funds through other means.”
Additional vending machines were to be placed on the premises under the agreement with the soft-drink giant.
Funds now will be provided by the Orland Youth Association, $5,000; Sandburg’s pep club/building fund, $8,332, and a fundraiser sponsored by the school’s baseball program, $2,000.
Installation will be handled by the Sandburg Booster Club.
The district maintenance staff will install the new electrical service for the scoreboard at a cost of about $4,000.
Also at the meeting, board members approved a name for the district’s alternative day school in Orland Park, which began offering courses this year. The school will be called Willow Grove, a name selected by students at the school because of the willow trees that grow on the site.
