The Park District won second place in the Nations in Bloom international environmental competition this week in Washington, D.C.
“This is better than cool,” said Park District Director Richard Grodsky about the district’s showing in the contest, nicknamed the “green Oscars.”
Hundreds of Park Districts entered the fourth annual contest, sponsored by the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management and Nations in Bloom, two English environmental activist groups. In September, the judges chose 35 finalists divided among five categories. The Elmhurst Park District was named in the 10,001-50,000 population category, with park districts or recreation departments from Akureyri, Iceland; Harneenlinna, Finland; Barnstaple and Bury St. Edmunds, England; Fairhope and Eufaula, Ala.; Botany Bay, Australia; Paluan, Philippines; and Ptuj, Slovenia.
The Park District placed second, behind Bury St. Edmunds and ahead of Fairhope, while the Chicago Park District placed third behind Shenzhen, China, and Phoenix. The only other U.S. winner was Colorado Springs, which took second place in the 300,001-1 million category behind Yokosuka, Japan.
