Two Crystal Lake youths were in police custody Monday, one day after a cashier was beaten in a failed robbery of Oak Street Food and Liquors, 256 N. Oak St.
Police caught David S. Lotesto, 17, of 177 Marian Parkway, in a field near the store a few minutes after the attack. A few hours later, with help from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department, police arrested a 14-year-old boy in his house on State Street in unincorporated Crystal Lake, according to Deputy Chief of Police Howard Parth.
Both youths were charged with attempted robbery, aggravated battery, burglary and mob action. Lotesto was in McHenry County Jail on $50,000 bond. The 14-year-old was in a juvenile detention facility in Kane County.
Parth said the two youths walked into the store at 4:56 p.m. Sunday. One shoved the cashier and struck her several times with his hands. The cashier suffered a minor hand injury.
The youths tried unsuccessfully to open the cash register, then ran from the store. Parth said neither was armed.
