Kudos go to Paula Prince of Port Richey, Fla. She takes home the $5,000 grand prize as the winner of the sixth annual Ugly Couch Contest sponsored by Sure Fit Inc., a manufacturer of slipcovers.
Prince’s grotesque (we mean that word in a Baroque sort of way) three-seater features a psychedelic wavy pattern in beige, brown and red velvet. It was singled out from more than 1,000 photographic entries received by Sure Fit in the nationwide contest this summer.
“We now like it better,” says the affable Prince, who admits that she and her husband never considered the sofa, which came from her in-laws and dates to the 1960s, ugly. Her daughter was the one who brought the contest to her attention.
As for the couch’s future, it will reside as it has for the past 25 years–in the Princes’ Florida room–until Mr. and Mrs. decide on a replacement. “We aren’t rushing into it,” says Prince.
No need to–there is no stipulation that the five grand be used to buy a new sofa. Sure Fit assures us there will be a seventh annual contest next year–although the theme may be different.
