Ground was broken Thursday for a $14 million expansion of the Medline Industries Inc. campus in Mundelein.

Mundelein Mayor Marilyn Sindles and representatives from Gov. George Ryan’s office joined Medline Industries executives for the groundbreaking. Sindles said she was thrilled that the company chose to stay and grow with the community.

Medline, a major manufacturer of health-care supplies, has more than 1,500 employees in Lake County. The company’s Mundelein campus covers 39.4 acres just east of U.S. Highway 45.

Pam McDonough, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, credited Ryan’s 1999 Economic Development for a Growing Economy Program with keeping Medline in Illinois. The program provides tax credits to businesses that create new jobs and make capital investments in the state. It was designed to prevent companies from moving to states that provided corporations with more tax incentives.

“I’m here to tell you today that we haven’t just leveled the economic playing field, we’ve tilted that field in our favor,” McDonough said.

The expansion will add a three-story office building, with 123,384 square feet, to the campus and bring in 300 new jobs, said John Marks, Medline spokesman.

Medline has experienced tremendous growth since relocating from Northbrook to Mundelein in 1984, Marks said.
