Children and their families can travel to the ancient past, visit a moment in American history or be a part of a moving experience this weekend:
– For the opening of Treasures from the Royal Tombs of Ur at the Oriental Institute, 1155 E. 58th St., on Saturday and Sunday, young visitors can have their name written in cuneiform, play a Sumerian game and listen to ancient music; free. 773-702-9507.
– In 1960, then 6-year-old African-American Ruby Bridges played a significant role in the struggle for integration when she dared to step foot into a segregated school. She will tell of that momentous time and sign her book, “Through My Eyes,” at the Chicago Historical Society, Clark Street at North Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday; free. 312-642-4600.
– Children can learn dynamic dance moves from New York choreographer David Dorfman and see some excerpts of a piece he will present for adult audiences that he calls “The Move Project.” It is inspired by the move the Dance Center of Columbia College is making to its new location, 1306 S. Michigan Ave. The free workshop begins at 2:15 p.m. Sunday before the 3 p.m. performance. $6-$10. 312-344-8300. For more family oriented events, check the Family Fare column in the On The Go segment.
