The Vernon Hills Village Board is supporting Lincolnshire’s efforts to work with the Illinois Department of Transportation on a plan to widen Illinois Highway 22 to four lanes.
Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to support Lincolnshire’s desired plan for the road, which calls for two lanes in each direction, turn lanes where appropriate, and major intersection improvements at Milwaukee Avenue, Riverwoods Road and Interstate Highway 94.
The border between Vernon Hills and Lincolnshire is just north of the highway, which is also known as Half Day Road. It is a major east-west artery through southern Lake County and was described in Vernon Hills’ resolution as “an integral link within the Lake County roadway network.”
“The board has always been supportive of the idea of improving Route 22,” said John Kalmar, assistant village manager. “We want to encourage IDOT and Lincolnshire to work together to get this thing done.”
Dozens of Lincolnshire residents showed up for a meeting in their community this week to protest the plan.
