A 39-year-old Gurnee woman was killed Friday when she drove her van across the center median and struck an oncoming truck at the S-curve at Washington Street just east of U.S. Highway 45 in Gurnee, officials said.
Bethany Roer was driving eastbound on Washington at approximately 12:15 p.m., when she apparently rounded a curve and drove directly into a 1997 flatbed truck driven by Alfred Layon, 34, of Missouri, police said. Layon was not injured.
Roer was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Jim Wipper. The accident occurred less than a mile from the victim’s home, he said.
Two children in the van, a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were transported to Provena-St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan, where the girl was treated and released, police said.
The boy was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with a broken leg, police said.
