Federal funding is being sought to create a new bus route between two shopping malls, Hawthorn Center in Vernon Hills and Golf Mill in Niles, a Pace spokesman said Wednesday.
The route, which would run along Illinois Highway 21 (Milwaukee Avenue), would include a stop at the Depke Juvenile Justice Complex and Huise Detention Center in Vernon Hills.
“It is still in the early planning states,” said Pace’s Blaine Krage. “If all goes well, the route may be implemented by late spring or early summer of next year.” Krage said Illinois 21 south of Hawthorn Center is not served by Pace.
Pace’s newest route, an express bus between Great Lakes Naval Base and Gurnee Mills, goes into service Friday morning. Krage said that bus will run Friday mornings and evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday. The one-way fare is $2.
Public hearings will be held this month on Pace’s 2001 budget, which will include a fare increase for passengers with disabilities. Those fares will go to $2.20 from $2 in Lake County and to $2.50 from $2 in Cook and DuPage Counties.
