An autopsy Thursday revealed that a 56-year-old bus driver suffered a heart attack as his bus veered from a Libertyville street, through a park and into a resident’s back yard, officials said.

“Fortunately, although the incident caused quite a bit of commotion, there were no children in the park at the time, and no one else was on the bus,” Libertyville Police Lt. Ron Fry said.

About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Benjamin Manubi of Zion, who was employed by Condell Medical Center in Libertyville to transport patients to and from the center, was driving a mini-bus south on Butterfield Road just south of Virginia Avenue, Fry said.

Witnesses said the bus left the road suddenly, veering to the right across the Metra Milwaukee District North Line railroad tracks, and into a back yard in the 1300 block of Romeo Circle, Fry said. The bus came to a rest between a gazebo and a deck.

Fry was pronounced dead at 3:23 p.m. in Condell, Chief Deputy Coroner Jim Wipper.

“We are lucky that this occurred when most children were still in school,” Fry said.
