The new Scooby flick, “Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders” (out this month on video and DVD), easily lives up to the excitement and zaniness of the old ’70s series.
The movie reunites Freddie, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby in an adventure that strands them in the middle of the Southwestern desert. Their “Mystery Machine” van (still that same ugly color of booger-green) breaks down in a dust storm. Then, come nightfall, a trio of creepy, scallop-headed aliens abducts Shaggy and Scooby. The next morning, a hippie girl named Crystal and her golden retriever, Amber, find Shaggy and Scooby in the desert. Crystal says she’s a nature photographer. Or is she? Finding out her real identity is one of the cool surprises of this movie. It’s also funny watching Shaggy act like a goof as he falls in love with Crystal. He sings a love song with lines that are so corny, you’ll cringe in embarrassment for him.
We think you’ll enjoy spotting all the “clues” scattered throughout the film. Be a Scooby sleuth and you might just figure out why the aliens are giving Scooby and his pals so much trouble. There are a few false leads along the way, so don’t jump the gun in solving the mystery.
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the creators of “Scooby-Doo,” serve as executive producers for this film, and they don’t miss a beat. Hats off to the new voice of Shaggy (Scott Innes), who sounds exactly like deejay Casey Kasem, who did Shaggy’s voice on the TV show.
