Dave Calendo had a plan.

The Willowbrook senior quarterback called his own number in overtime Friday night to lift the host Warriors to a 50-47 victory over Hinsdale South in the West Suburban Gold opener in Villa Park.

“I went to the sidelines and I asked for the ball,” Calendo said of his 1-yard touchdown run on third down in overtime. “I just followed [center] Dan Daly into the end zone. This is one of the best feelings in the world.”

Calendo’s carry capped a wild night that saw Willowbrook jump to a 17-0 lead before Hinsdale South responded with 24 points in the final 6 minutes 38 seconds of the second quarter.

Hinsdale South took a 44-36 lead with 7:08 left in the fourth on Sam Louise’s second touchdown pass of the game to Zach Luetkemeyer, who had 307 all-purpose yards.

Calendo, who went 7-for-15 for 86 yards, then scored on a 19-yard keeper and found Bert Ferguson with a two-point conversion with 4:10 left to force overtime.

The Hornets managed a 29-yard field goal from Joe Callan to open the extra session before Calendo won it for the Warriors.

Al Swilley, who scored three times and recovered a pair of fumbles on defense, had 258 yards on 22 carries for Willowbrook (3-0, 1-0). Louise went 9-for-20 for 190 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Hornets (2-1, 0-1).

Woodstock 24, Dundee-Crown 14

At Woodstock, it’s probably pretty safe to say that T.J. Liebetrau is feeling comfortable in his new home.

The senior transfer from Marian Central Catholic played a huge role in the Blue Streaks’ hard-fought 24-14 victory over Dundee-Crown (0-3, 0-3). Liebetrau caught six passes for 111 yards, booted a 41-yard field goal late in the second half and recorded two fourth-quarter quarterback sacks as the Blue Streaks (3-0, 3-0) struggled to the victory.

“I’m starting to get comfortable with the system,” Liebetrau said. “Woodstock football has always been hard-nosed football and I’m glad to be playing that kind. Edgar [Rodriguez] is still our No. 1 receiver, but if I can come in and play a secondary role to help the team, that’s great.”

Woodstock had an impressive nine-play, 91-yard drive in the first quarter that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Luke Fritz. Dundee-Crown’s Roland Thornton countered with a 2-yard scoring run to give Dundee-Crown a 7-6 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Woodstock’s Rodriguez took a handoff and sprinted 89 yards to give Woodstock the lead for good. Liebetrau’s field goal with two seconds left in the half gave the Blue Streaks a 17-7 halftime edge. Liebetrau caught four passes for 82 yards in the opening half, including a 31-yarder where he dragged three D-C tacklers that help set up his field goal

D-C scored in the third-quarter on a 19-yard pass from Scott Komaromy to Chris O’Kane. Woodstock answered on a 5-yard scoring run by Fritz with 8:43 to play. Woodstock quarterback Justin Duhai finished the night 10-for-22 for 171 yards.

“We knew we had to come in here to iron out mistakes, and we got a couple of things worked on but we still have a lot of work to do,” Woodstock coach Ed Brucker said. “I don’t think the kids respected Dundee-Crown all that much. That’s a good football team.

“Offensively, we shot ourselves in the foot time and again. Those are things we need to get corrected, fast.”
