Scoring on the first play from scrimmage, a 75-yard run, Woodard led Crane past Lake View 30-6 in a Public Chicago West conference game Thursday afternoon.
“I thought I’d have a good game, but not this good,” said Woodard, who finished with two touchdowns and 194 yards in 18 carries for Crane (3-0, 2-0).
“Every game is hard for us,” Crane coach Anthony Jackson said. “We don’t take anybody lightly. Lake View came back and we stepped up our defense.”
Lake View (1-2, 0-1) cut the lead to 14-8 when Kevin Davis (132 yards in 18 carries) scored on a touchdown run with 4 minutes 57 seconds remaining in the first half.
But Crane’s defense shut out Lake View in the second half, while the offense produced two touchdowns. Woodard scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter, and quarterback Darryle Byndum connected with LeRoy Anderson on a 47-yard TD pass in the fourth.
Defensively, sophomore Thomas Finlan had an interception and a fumble recovery and sophomore teammate Marque Moman added an interception for Crane.
Kelvyn Park 38, Roosevelt 0: Quarterback Lamario Duncan led Kelvyn Park (2-0, 2-0) by throwing for 214 yards, including three touchdown passes, and adding 34 yards rushing, including a 12-yard TD run, in the Public Chicago North contest. Duncan’s No. 1 target was Ricardo Varela (four receptions, 72 yards, one touchdown), and Isiah Neumann caught a 42-yard TD pass. Running back Jose Duarte finished with 60 yards in 10 carries and a 25-yard touchdown run.
Kenwood 21, Young 20: After falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter, Kenwood (1-2) came back to win on its last posession. Quincy Black scored with 1:56 to go on a 5-yard TD pass from QB Drew Chesebro, who was 13-of-30 on the day for 122 yards and two TDs. Chesebro’s subsequent pass to Marcus Sanders for the two-point conversion gave Kenwood its first win of the season.
Gage Park 45, Kennedy 0: Lavell Simmons pulled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jermaine Govan on the first play from scrimmage as Gage Park (2-1, 2-0) rolled in the Public Chicago Central. Govan finished 9-of-15 for 206 yards, adding two TD runs of 11 and 9 yards.
