Doing battle against Dutch elm disease just got easier for Elmhurst homeowners.
The City Council recently approved a plan that helps residents pay for fungicide injections for elm trees on parkways or private property. Though no treatment is 100 percent effective against the disease, fungicide injections are considered by arborists to be an important preventive measure in the fight against Dutch elm disease.
The city will pay $50 to $100 toward the cost of treating parkway trees in good condition; smaller subsidies are available for elms on private property or trees that are in poor condition. Some restrictions apply. For information, call 630-530-3020.
Savings for residents who participate in the program are expected to run 30 to 35 percent, according to the city. Owners of trees that do not qualify for the subsidy will be able to take advantage of a lower injection price negotiated by the city.
