Due to lack of interest, Schaumburg officials have canceled a conference that was supposed to draw academics, economists and elected officials from across the country to share ideas about edge cities.

Paul Evans, Schaumburg’s community development planner, said it appears the village did not give people enough time to include the event in their budgets and schedules.

In May, the village announced its plans to hold the conference July 23 to 25 at the Schaumburg Marriott.

The village had hoped to attract about 300 people, but only 50 to 70 individuals had indicated they would attend. Evans said the village plans to reschedule for spring 2001.

The event, called “The Municipal Perspective: The National Edge City Conference,” was to be a brainstorming session and a time to share ideas about cities that are situated near the fringes of major urban centers. Topics were to include cutting-edge architecture, e-commerce and its effect on the economy, and methods of transportation to improve access into edge cities.

The conference was expected to focus on Schaumburg; Troy, Mich.; and Brookfield, Wis.
