Orland Park Plan Commission members will get a revised proposal for the Marcus Theatres expansion, after the Village Board’s Community Development Committee voted this week to send a scaled-down version of the project back to the commission.
Residents of the Hummingbird Hill and Saratoga subdivisions and the Alden-Orland Park Rehabilitation and Health Care Center were represented at Monday’s meeting by resident Dan Braglia. The groups oppose the expansion of the theaters at 16350 S. La Grange Rd., which already have 14 screens with 2,795 seats.
Marcus Theatres had requested four more screens and a 75-by-40-foot “ultrascreen,” which would create a total of 3,620 seats in the complex. The proposal also called for building a 4-story parking garage. The Plan Commission unanimously rejected the plan on May 23.

Now, the commission will review a plan that calls for only the construction of the ultrascreen and a 3-story garage, village planner Greg Dreyer said. The garage will block residents’ views of a detention area, Dreyer said.
Braglia brought up that point at Monday’s meeting, saying that the rehabilitation center had just built a recreation deck on its building.
“Now those people are going to have to look at a parking garage or a wall?” he asked. “We already shot down theaters at 143rd Street [at the proposed Main Place development] and we are going to add more here? Enough is enough. … This is a little on the greedy side.”
Braglia said he and other residents will continue to fight the theater expansion.
