Five new activities were added at Lincoln-Way High School during the 1999-2000 school year, according to a year-end report presented recently to the school board.

The new activities involve students with a wide range of interests, including dancing, sports and teaching.

Jay Johnson Jr. and Steve Provis, activities coordinators for the school, said they are focusing their efforts on boosting participation in extracurricular activities.

News about school clubs and intramural teams is posted on the Lincoln-Way Web site and on the school display board, Johnson said.

An especially successful event was a five-on-five basketball game with more than 100 students involved, he said.

At the beginning of the school year, students will be surveyed to see what extracurricular activities they prefer, he said.

Percentages of students participating in extracurricular activities varies from class to class, Provis said. The goal is 70 percent, and some classes are close to that number, he said. “Freshmen and sophomores, they’re right there knocking at the door.”

An important part of the coordinator’s job is keeping students who were cut from sports teams involved. More than 60 percent of those students played intramural sports or took up another activity, Provis said.

The coordinators’ summer project is contacting all incoming freshmen to let them know what kinds of activities are available to them.
