The McHenry County Health Department expects to receive $186,000 as its share of a $9.1 billion lawsuit settlement between the state and tobacco companies.

The department plans to use the money to promote anti-smoking initiatives, said John Heisler, a member of the county’s Board of Health and chairman of the County Board’s Finance Committee.

Heisler informed the committee Tuesday that the department expects to receive some of the money in September. It will have a better idea of how much money in a few weeks.

“We’re going to take our best guess at how much money we’ll get this year and start the programs,” he said. “We’ll put the balance in next year’s budget.”

The county’s fiscal year begins Dec. 1.

The Board of Health on Monday decided to support four anti-smoking programs: one in restaurants, a second in movie theaters and two in local schools.
