Thanks to pupils at two Round Lake elementary schools, a group of canine police will be better protected on the job.

Student council members at Village and Ellis Elementary Schools saved their pennies–almost $2,500 worth–to buy bullet-resistant vests for five police dogs with the Lake County sheriff’s office, according to the Round Lake area schools Community Unit District 116.

The students donated another two vests to outfit canine police in high-risk areas of Cook County, the release said.

The students presented the vests at ceremonies earlier this month.
