With his first year as Orland Hills police chief under his belt, Richard Schryver has gotten the nod from village officials to tackle his second.
Three Village Board members–Dave Diggs, Art Gnech and Mike Hanley–voted to renew Schryver’s contract. Trustees Don Bigos and Marty McGill voted “present,” while trustee Cal Million was absent.
Schryver’s new one-year pact includes a salary increase to $56,650 annually from $55,000, the amount included in previously approved wage schedules for village employees.
“I wasn’t in support of hiring him in the first place,” Bigos said of Schryver, who came from the Oak Lawn Police Department May 1, 1999. “That hasn’t changed. I haven’t been impressed.”

McGill said he has not had time to review Schryver’s new contract.
Schryver said Bigos and McGill never approached him with concerns about the department, adding that in his first 12 months on the job, he put in “16 months worth of work.”
“I enjoy the village and enjoy the community,” Schryver said. “I think it’s a great bunch of people.”
Mayor Kyle Hastings said he was “elated” at Schryver’s contract renewal.
“We have one of the finest chiefs in the state of Illinois, and I’m very honored to have a person of his caliber in this village,” Hastings said.
