A household hazardous waste collection, giving residents of the north and northwest suburbs a chance to get rid of toxic chemicals, has been scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeling Township garbage transfer station near Des Plaines.

The collection, sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, will be held at the transfer station on Des Plaines River Road, about a half-mile north of Central Road, across from Maryville Academy.

Among the items accepted at the collection will be aerosol, latex and oil-based paints and thinners; household batteries; used motor oil; antifreeze; drain cleaners; herbicides; pesticides; lawn chemicals; pool chemicals; cleaning products; fluorescent light bulbs; and computer monitors.

Lead acid batteries, propane tanks, smoke detectors, fireworks and other explosives and business or commercial wastes will not be accepted.

The collection was rescheduled from a May 20 event that was canceled due to a storm-related power outage.

More information about the event can be obtained on the Solid Waste Agency’s Web site, www.swancc.org, or by calling 847-296-9205 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
