A local fundraising organization whose goal is to raise money for research into rare genetic disorders is sponsoring a charity gala later this month in Lincolnshire.

The group, Disorders of Chromosome 16, or DOC16, was started two years ago by a Vernon Hills family whose daughter is affected by one of these disorders. The organization raised more than $60,000 last year and awarded medical research grants to renowned universities such as Oxford University in England to study abnormalities of chromosome 16.

One disorder, trisomy 16, is responsible for more than 100,000 miscarriages each year. DOC16’s goal is to provide answers to help children with these genetic disorders and others with conditions linked to abnormalities of chromosome 16, one of 23 pairs of chromosomes in normal human cells.

Those conditions include Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract; autism; and certain forms of cancer, said Karen Lange, president of the organization. Detailed information about the organization’s work can be found on the Internet at www.Trisomy16.org.

The “Wish Upon a Star” fundraiser will be held the evening of June 30 at Marriott’s Lincolnshire Resort. The event will begin with an open bar, silent auction and sit-down dinner, followed by a live auction and dancing to the band Music Express. Among the items to be sold at the live auction are a romantic getaway to San Francisco, a New York vacation and a private sailboat dinner for eight on Lake Michigan. Raffle prizes will include a luxury trip to Aspen and a five-night west Caribbean cruise.

Tickets for the gala cost $75. For more information, call Gayle Timlin at 847-367-6719.
